SoundTracking: Walking Away

WA2

It was on a twitching impulse that I walked into my former boss’ office in 2006 to announce that I would be leaving the company in a month and move to NY. I quit that day, March 1st. It did not occur to me that the universe had lessons it wanted me to learn, growth spurts it wanted me to burst through before it would allow my dream to come to fruition – and that process would take another 7 years to arrive. Walking Away was born from that initial attempt, it was the soundtrack I created to accompany me and give me strength and courage. I kept this as a private collection to share only with people I came in contact with who were experiencing a transition in their lives, and so it’s been passed down privately until now. When I listen to it today, starting with Yolanda Adams’ Open Up My Heart, I understand how it encompassed both the feeling of being completely lost and afraid yet filled with the certainty that I needed to move on from where I was standing to grow. I was searching for direction, for a finger to be pointed, for arrows on the walkways to be painted, for an emotional compass to guide me intuitively to that destination. It is now that I understand that all along the path pointed right back at me, I needed to arrive into my-self, to come home, to inhabit my skin and shed some scars and dead weight before the light would shine bright enough for me to see ahead of me. It all still resonates clearly and deeply and carries the same meaning: treat yourself with love, treat others accordingly, acknowledge and be responsible to that knowledge because when you know better, you do better. These songs in turn carry the melody of that inner rummaging, that internal scavenger hunt, the moment of pausing the noise and listening closely and intently on what we feel the purpose of our life is. As it often happens, it takes a hurricane of emotion to ravage you, to strip you down to nothing, to bring you back to basics, for you to start anew. Once you start feeling your spirit being filled and regaining strength you break away from what holds you down and you begin to find your footing to stand tall and your voice to say what you mean and mean what you say. If you are holding any of these questions within you, then I hope that the soul of this collection can move you, inspire you, touch you and more importantly make you feel deeply within and listen to your inner voice speak.

You & I [Valentine's Compilation]

You&I3_3

Happy Valentine’s Day! As I sit here and rummage through my earliest Valentine’s memories as a kid and teenager, it was always about celebrating friendships. Later when I moved to California, and briefly to Mexico, in the Mexican culture Valentine’s is an all-encompassing holiday covering all angles, no one left outside. It was later that I took notice that single folks began to boycott the holiday subscribing to the bitterness of being alone on the day you’re supposed to be showered with gifts, attention and affection, as if we didn’t just come off dazed and confused from the hullabaloo of Christmas – we’re greedy in general, aren’t we? I don’t understand the concept of creating a “haterade parade” to celebrate the pity party of one. If you find yourself alone, focus on what you do have, those around you who love you for who you are and whatever is going right in your life. When you live in gratitude the universe opens itself to give you more to be grateful for.

This compilation was born out of one single song that I held in a folder because it made me feel something very specific: longing. The song that started this all and is the oldest in the group is Janet Jackson’s Days Go By. Now I see that I manifested love in my life simply by keeping it alive in me. I am fortunate to be loved by a group of friends and a partner that have always nudged me to be a better me, who have withstood the tempest and the fire of loving someone with a hot head, a fiery heart, a boiling temper and a short patience. But with those short-comings I have learned to love bigger, stronger and sturdier through their love.

You & I is the story of the beginning and journey of a love that’s had highs and lows, that’s been shaken and stirred but also nurtured and cultivated. I wish this for you, open your heart and allow this to come in. Do not allow your sorrow to outgrow the space where love should occupy. Somewhere in you find a place to keep a seed, hold on tightly to it and believe, if it is not in your life now that it will come to you when you are ready to embrace it. With this said I give to you something that tells that story in my life. Find hope in it. Peep the special collabo on track 2, which was edited down from a chorus that made it long and labored into a seamless version of the song, thank you love, xo.

01 – Anjulie – You and I
02 – Adele – One And Only (AC Beats Radio Edit)
03 – Pink – Just Give Me A Reason
04 – M. Pokora – Finally Found Ya
05 – Christina Perri – Arms
06 – Jessie J – Silver Lining
07 – Brandy – Without You
08 – James Morrison – Get To You
09 – Christina Aguilera – Just A Fool

Caribbean King Presents Dance Vol. 63

ChristianCover0213

There was a time when I got hot & heavy with Twitter. I mainly used it to post and promote music we posted on MusicBoxMix but along the way I met a group of wonderful people who eventually became very close friends. Friends that I communicated with about everything and anything, it’s ironic how technology is driving a wedge in personal dynamics with people and at the same time bring complete strangers into your life whom you find yourself sharing aspects of your life that you otherwise wouldn’t share, from personal interests to secrets that you only tell yourself, and them. Christian a/k/a Caribbean King has been a constant in my life since we got a hold of each other on Twitter and have very similar crazed passions for music, fashion and pop culture. As MusicBoxMix evolved into a dance music blog, the Caribbean King established himself as a brand in the gay community online. And now he’s on his sixty-third dance compilation and keeping true to his brand, it’s saucy and sexy. It lays it down thick with some Moombahton (which if it wasn’t for him I would have no direct knowledge of) and skips right into some progressive house, dance pop and hard & layered electro beats. I put this mix on this morning and found myself bouncing and poppin’ around the room. He was also kind enough to provide a track listing of the mix to entice ya and a link to his Tumblr where you can find a download link if ya diggin’ it like I’m drillin’ it. BAM!

Tracklist:
Bumaye (Watch Out for This) [ft. Busy Signal & Flexican] – Major Lazer

7 Unfortunate Habits of Unhappy People

edvardmunch3

Everyone experiences unhappy times on occasion, but there is a big difference between experiencing a temporary bout of sadness and living a habitually unhappy life. That’s what chronically unhappy people do. Even if you are generally a happy person, take a look at these seven habits to determine if any of them are keeping you from experiencing greater amounts of joy.

1. Playing it too safe.

Don’t play it so safe that you put yourself in situations where none of your potential options satisfy your calling. Dream your dream, but also realize that you are more than just the dreamer, you are the point of origin for your dream’s reality.

Your dream is your creative vision for your future life. You must break out of your current comfort zone and become comfortable with the unfamiliar. Start smashing through those emotional barriers. Move forward. Life doesn’t magically give you what you want in your mind; it gives you what you insist upon with your actions. Read The Power of Habit.

2. Continuous self-doubt.

You will inevitably become who you believe yourself to be.

If you spend enough time saying, “I’m not smart enough, thin enough and rich enough,” it’s likely that you will someday be right. On the contrary, if you have the belief that you are smart enough, thin enough and rich enough now to take the next positive step forward, over time you will likely acquire the capacity to be these very things at your desired level of expectation.

3. Obsession with control.

Sometimes people put too much interest into trying to control every tiny aspect of their lives. Learn to let go, relax and ride the path that life takes you. Try something new, take a chance, but above all, smile and enjoy the scenery.

Freeing yourself from trying to control the insignificant things lets you experience more of the good stuff around you. The greatest joys in life are often the unexpected surprises that arrive when you are flexible and open to life’s twists and turns. Read Buddha’s Brain.

4. Setting unrealistic expectations.

You won’t drop two jean sizes overnight. Your relationships won’t grow without your attention. You can’t pay off $25K in debt in a week. Your new business venture won’t instantly turn a profit.

You’re going to make mistakes now and then. You will go a day or two when you feel like you’re running in place. You’re going to try new techniques and they’re not always going to work. You’re a human being. You’re going to fail from time to time. But that’s how you grow. Worthwhile goals take work and persistence.

5. A bad attitude.

The greatest discovery you will ever make is that you can change your life by simply changing your attitude. Optimism is the most essential human trait, because it allows you to evolve your ideas and improve every situation you encounter.

So don’t take things for granted. Be positive and realize how fortunate you are. Not every day will be perfect, but if you pay attention you’ll realize that 99.9% of the time you’re having either a good day or a great day.

6. Slacking on exercise.

You DO have enough time to exercise. If you say otherwise, you’re lying to yourself. The truth is you don’t have time not to, or sooner or later you’ll be making time for illness.

At least 30 minutes of exercise every day has been proven on countless occasions by countless medical studies to increase the strength, happiness and longevity of human lives. You’re talking about three and a half hours a week. That’s hardly seems an excessive amount of time considering the tremendous benefits in terms of the impact on the remaining 164.5 hours of the week. Read The 4-Hour Body.

7. Overindulgence of a good thing.

As Oscar Wilde once said, “Everything in moderation, including moderation.”

Eating too much makes you fat. Spending too much money makes you broke. Working too much leaves your family at home missing you. Playing too much leaves important work undone… And so on and so forth.

Happiness depends on the balancing act of applying your positive resources equally to the hungry deficits in your life. All details aside, the important thing to remember is this: Long-term happiness is never found in one good thing; it is a combination, it is a balanced lifestyle.

SoundTracking: Leona Lewis – Glassheart

Leona Glass

As I was emptying my apartment this weekend, I kept listening to this album. After suffering through a devastating breakup she went into the studio with the intention of producing a full record that would translate the pain into music. In the midst of recording the album which was going to conceptually be dance driven, Avicii filed a lawsuit against her label for sampling one his tracks without credit – the track ended up placed on the track list as an afterthought. Problem-ridden and many delays later, after a year-long pause, Glassheart was released.  It has been dismissed (and literally slammed) by critics, but in my opinion this is definitely her strongest output so far that is directly personal to her.  The singles released have not been able to chart highly and the label has not stood behind it. I say all of this to point out that sometimes charts and critics know nothing and speak for no one but themselves. Sad yet pulsating an eclectic mix, swaying between mid-tempo ballads and down-gritty dubstep, this album is an amazing collection of tunes. Furthermore, you don’t have to be down and out to appreciate music about losing and letting go. There are always ties that behind, things that weigh us, stress factors, discontent, imbalance, and though it’s amazing to listen to the feel-good music most of the time, every now and again you need your pain written out and told for you, words that when you listen, speak to you directly as if they were explaining your perspective and situation. It’s a moody, broody mix of music that borders on dark (even when it’s pop) yet somehow manages to swim to the surface and float along in the midst of the feelings, it sometimes feels like it’s sinking, but it definitely survives. A huge underrated album from late 2012. From the draggy but soaring Trouble, the Mariah-esque Unlove Me, and Lovebird to the dubsteppy Come Alive, again it goes into mid-tempo ballads with different stylistic approaches – love When It Hurts – right back to Come Alive, possibly the standout track of it all and the one that in its title metaphorically saves the project. Even though I listen to music like a crackhead on a good piece of rock, there is music that seeps in and takes over and this was a sleeper-creeper. And now I am fully immersed. For those of you who are part of the e-mail list, this will be tomorrow’s send. It gave me the words I did not want to put together myself about the strength in feeling lost and having hope, of letting go and feeling strong. It’s interesting how we all listen, perceive and translate very personally our music. Cheers!

Trouble (2nd single – Live Piano Version)

Lovebird (3rd single – Live Performance)
